Villarreal manager Marcelino has expressed confidence in Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey as the Spanish side prepares to face Tottenham Hotspur in their UEFA Champions League opener on Tuesday night.

The clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium marks Partey’s first return to England since leaving Arsenal, where he spent four years before his contract expired last season. The 32-year-old joined Villarreal over the summer and is set for a key role in their group stage campaign.

Marcelino insisted that despite off-field challenges, the midfielder remains in excellent condition for the match. “I am totally convinced that he is mentally prepared and technically prepared to play,” he said.

The coach praised Partey’s experience and leadership qualities, highlighting the value he brings to the squad. “We are very happy Thomas is with us for his football capacity, football ability, and his presence as a human. He is a great player with a lot of experience. He has played for a lot of top clubs. We know he has a great level. I think he will get back to a top level. I am very happy he is with us in the team.”

The Black Stars midfielder is expected to feature when Villarreal take on Tottenham at 19:00 GMT in London, in what promises to be one of the standout fixtures of matchday one.
