Board Chairman of the Ghana Audit Service, Prof. Edward Dua Agyeman has revealed that the move to get the Auditor General, Daniel Domelovo to take his accumulated annual leave was instigated by the Audit Service Board.
According to him, the board wrote to the Presidency after several attempts to get Mr Domelovo to proceed on leave proved futile.
This follows from the Presidency ordering Mr Domelevo to take his accumulated annual leave of 123 working days, effective July 1, 2020, per sections 20 (1) and 31 of the Labour Act.
Though a section of the public have criticized the move and described it as an attempt to oust the Auditor General from office, Prof Dua Agyeman believes it is a step in the right direction.
“If you want to accumulate your leave you have to inform the Chief of Staff snd give reasons why you are not going on leave…What happened in our case as the board is that we have discussed the leave schedule for all staff. We came to the Auditor General and we asked him when he is ready to go on leave and he said we cannot ask him to go on leave because we did not appoint him. Anytime we asked him to go on leave he said he wouldn’t go, so now it is the appointing authority who has asked him to go on leave.”
“What I know is that every public servant is required to go on leave when the time is due. If he had gone to audit some people and he saw that the Chief Executive of that place has not gone on leave, he would have reported it and asked why that CEO had not gone on leave so why is it that he, the Auditor General has not gone on leave and people are reading political meanings into it?” he quizzed.
“Whatever the board says he says he will never listen to us, so what we had to do was to let the appointing authority know and we wrote to the President…” he added.
