A man was recently caught on CCTV attempting to steal two mobile phones from a boutique in Weija, a suburb of Accra. The footage shows him pretending to be on a phone call while discreetly slipping the devices into his pants, all while out of the sight of the unsuspecting saleswoman.
After carrying out the act, he casually exited the store. However, his escape was short-lived, as he was confronted by the shop owner right at the entrance. The unexpected encounter forced him to quickly turn back into the store.
Upon his return, he removed the hidden phones and placed them back where he had taken them. In a bizarre twist, he told those present that he was not attempting theft but merely testing how angry the saleswoman or shop owner would get in such a situation.
The incident has since gone viral on social media, with many users reacting to the man’s excuse as both absurd and insulting. Commenters have also praised the vigilance of the shop’s management and the effectiveness of the CCTV system.
While it is unclear whether the man has been handed over to the police, the footage serves as a reminder of the importance of security measures in retail spaces, especially in high-traffic areas like Weija.
