Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has debunked long-standing rumours suggesting that former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, voted in his favour during the heated election that made him Speaker of the 8th Parliament.

Mr. Bagbin’s election in January 2021 followed a tense and chaotic voting process, after which one New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP was accused of crossing party lines to back his candidacy, a move that sparked internal turmoil within the NPP. Adwoa Safo’s name later emerged in political circles as the alleged defector.

However, addressing the issue when the family of Apostle Kwadwo Safo paid a courtesy visit to his office on Monday, October 13, Mr. Bagbin openly dismissed the speculation and cleared the former legislator of any wrongdoing.

“I call her my daughter because when I came to Parliament, she was a small girl. So, I began calling her my daughter before she joined politics and entered Parliament. But we belong to different political traditions,” Mr. Bagbin explained.

He clarified that his long-standing personal relationship with Adwoa Safo likely led to the widespread misunderstanding surrounding her alleged vote. “Because she is my daughter and we love each other, when I was contesting to be Speaker, they thought she voted for me,” he said.

Mr. Bagbin’s clarification finally puts to rest one of Parliament’s most persistent rumors, reaffirming his respect for Adwoa Safo and acknowledging their friendship despite their political differences.
